I do not come from money. Suffice it to say, neither do my children. But I love all things trendy and I love putting "new" things in my closet. Shoes, Purses, Accessories, CLOTHES... And by new, I mean new to me. Living on one income while I was a stay at home mom for 8 years and then taking on a part time job once both my girls were in school has not exactly put us (monetarily speaking) in the lap of luxury. But I would not trade my life with a single soul! I so value that I have been able to invest in my family and give things of value that can't be taken away.
Still, sometimes I would look at other women with perfect nails and perfect hair and great outfits and think "Man, they are so put together!" And then I would start to calculate the cost in my head to maintain that appearance... Yeah, not for me. My husband and I have this crazy idea that right now we will "live like no one else, so later we can live like no one else," (thank you Dave Ramsey) meaning we'll hold on to some of our money now so we'll have some later when we are old and cranky.
However, that doesn't mean we can't still look "put together"! Are you kidding me? Nothing gives me more pleasure than to "buck the system". So I have a few strategies, and they may not be for everyone, but I love the thrill of the hunt and the saving of the mighty dollar. Some of my favorite places to get ideas for trendy outfits that fit my lifestyle (no pin thin heels for this mama!) is Lucky Magazine,What I wore,
and I'm a little embarrassed to say it, but sometimes even What not to Wear. (Small doses, people, small doses.)
What I'm looking for is a silhouette. I might clip out an outfit I love out of the magazine (that usually retails from $500-$1000 head to toe) and hit the thrift stores, consignment stores and clearance racks to create a similar outfit. I've even been known to alter a few things into something new. My outfits rarely exceed $20, head to toe. I'm talking accessories inlcuded! I love to get compliments on my clothing and I especially love when people ask "Where did you get that?"...
What better way to keep things green and recycle, than to hit the consignment and thrift stores for unique items?
